Flitwick Moor Photography Course with Greensand Country

My first outdoor MelenTraining group session since 2019 — a short walk photographing Flitwick Moor on the 19th June, part of a series of training I ran with Greensand Country for the Greensand Country Festival 2021.

Flitwick Moor is a genuinely special place to shoot — a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the largest semi-natural lowland wetland left in the region.  It's got woodland, open fields, and a damp, swampy stretch that gives it an almost prehistoric atmosphere.  Ideal for wide landscapes and close-up detail alike.

There's real history in the moor too — peat was once cut here, and in the 1880s the chalybeate springs sparked a Victorian craze for Flitwick mineral water, marketed at the time as one of the most invigorating tonics in the world.  That kind of layered landscape — wildlife, industry, and a bit of Victorian eccentricity — makes for a genuinely interesting place to teach composition and light.  It's the sort of location where a shot of a single reed against still water can carry as much weight as the wide landscape view, if you take the time to look properly.

Great for landscape photography and finding scenes of interest, with blurred water black and white images giving brilliant colours against the green summer trees.  The marshy swamps and fast flowing river Flit provide photographic opportunities everywhere — from wide open views one moment to tight detail shots the next.
